Welcome! My name is Issa (Ee-sah), and I am a born and bred New Yorker in the midst of my next big adventure: Single Motherhood! I keep pretty busy trying to balance raising my son, a career as a freelance writer, and staying sane, all at the same time.

A passion for writing began early for me and I was presented my first award for a piece of my writing at only 7 years old by then-New York City Mayor Edward Koch, as a city-wide winner of a poetry contest. I haven’t written poetry since my angst-ridden teens, but my love of words never left me.

I am the author of the book Grief Thoughts: Brief Anecdotes About Profound Loss; a published book essayist; a New York Daily News featured blogger of the now-defunct single motherhood blog, Single Mama NYC, which was recognized as a Voice of the Year in the Identity Category seen here at BlogHer; my essays have been published in TueNight — an online publication for women over 40 — here, here, and here; and in the online literary journal Raising Mothers. You can also watch a clip of me sharing advice as a single parent in a WPIX11 news segment here.

If you are interested in homeschooling and don’t know where to start, I created the Homeschool Starter Kit to give you the resources needed to help your family begin that journey.
